Cose Out on Remaing Bottles. La Vizcaína is the name of the winery Raul Perez created to explore the hillside vineyards around his hometown of Vatuille de Abajo. All are from vines 40 years or older and the reds are all field blends of Mencia (most) and other vines introduced to Bierzo by monks walking the Camino de Santiago over the centuries. This is from a 1.5 hectare vineyard in El Rapolao mostly planted in 1920 with a bit of fruit from a 1980 planting. All whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, and aging in neutral oak allow the chewy, dark red fruit, character of Rapolao to shine through. It’s delicious now, better from 2024 and best before 2031 or so.
"Raúl Pérez has purchased the plot of El Rapolao that he uses for La Vizcaína, close to 1.3 hectares, and they expect the wine to have a big change as they are taking over the viticulture and want to lower yields. The 2019 La Vizcaína El Rapolao has plenty of tannin and is more concentrated than the 2020."

Youthfully chewy and alluringly sweet, offering concentrated, spice-laced black raspberry, bitter cherry, boysenberry and succulent herb flavors sharpened by a jolt of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet, smoky and extremely long, showing solid grip and mounting tannins that add framework to the intense dark fruit."
