As Josh Raynolds wrote in Vinous a while back, “Owner/winemaker Russel From’s wines are among the Central Coast’s most flamboyant and high-octane bottlings but I seldom find them to be truly overbearing or thick in the way, that, for example, a number of Barossa Valley Shiraz’s were in the early 2000s. Most of the Herman Story wines do cruise well past 15% alcohol and some nudge 16% but there’s usually good buffering acidity to keep them energetic. They’ll likely freak out most die-hard, Old World wine lovers but I’d be more than happy to drink them this winter with rich meat preparations and I’ve had them work fabulously with braised Indian lamb dishes (shank, for example) as well as Thai Massaman beef curries.”
The 2020 is yet another success in this style, big and rich and opulent, but not thick or sweet at all. It’s loaded with aromas and flavors of blackberries, black pepper, smoked pork, roasted beef, wood smoke, vanilla, mocha and more. As Jeb Dunnuck said in his 96 point rave for the 2018, “This cuvée always delivers the goods.”
