Stand at the top of Grand Cru Mazis and look down the rows. You can immediately pick out Jean-Michel’s vines. They're the ones that look clean and trim and seem to exude health and vitality. Every year, Jean-Michel invests in a brand new oak vat to ferment this wine and then purchases barrels from 300 year-old trees (air dried for 4 years) to bring it to maturity. When all that's done, in a good year, there are just 2 or 3 barrels of wine to bottle for the world. If Domaine Romanee Conti made Mazis-Chambertin, this is what it would taste like.
In 2017, this is as much “Chambertin” as it is “Mazis,” with a rich and velvety texture that’s just captivating. The aromas are more compacted and deep than on any of Jean-Michel’s other 2017s, but aromas of dark black cherry/berry, earth, spice and “animale” soar from the glass nicely. As always, it’s a big wine – filling your mouth from side to side and front to back and closing with firm and rich tannins. But it’s also perfectly balanced, detailed, and even a little elegant in 2017. The finish is huge and long and very persistent, with spice, berry, earth and iron flavors lingering on and on. Fun to taste right now, but hold on to it for 8-10 years and you’ll get the full expression of Jean-Michel’s skill and a true Grand Cru site.
