Organic/Bio Lower ABV Jerome Seguin purchased this half-acre plot in Marsannay’s fine Batayart vineyard in 2014, making this his 10th vintage working with these now 30-40 year-old vines on the hillside in Couchey. It’s darker and more savory on the nose than the Gevrey with lots of spiced black raspberry fruit and a touch of smoke and damp earth. The palate shows excellent ripeness and sweetness to the dark berry and black and Bing cherry fruit and layered coffee, smoke and sweet spice complexity. The wine flows like silk from front to back before finely gripping tannins come up with a squeeze to sustain the ripe spiced black fruit. It’s delicious right now with dark meat poultry/birds, beef simmered in red wine, and savory mushroom dishes and it will gain even more complexity over the next 8 years or so.
