Organic/Bio The Boulay family have held vines in Sancerre since 1380 and Gerard Boulay has grown and made wine here for almost all of his 60 years. He holds about 22 acres of vineyard on the steeply sloped hill of Chavignol, the heart of Sancerre. His 35-70 year-old vines dig into Chavignol’s famous white “terres blanche” chalk and limestone soils also important in Champagne and Chablis. The farming is all organic, the vineyards worked and harvested by hand, and the winemaking as simple as can be with native yeasts, just 5% or so in old barrel, and a light touch of sulfur only at bottling.
Vintage 2022 is a marvel in Sancerre, a hot, dry, year that somehow delivered wines of moderate alcohol and wonderful zip and bite. Boulay picks for ripeness of skins and seeds (usually much later than neighbors), so the first impression here is of amplitude, breadth, density and loads of peach, apple, and lemon/lime fruit. As the wine opens, Sancerre's chalk and flint minerality comes forward and, with the initially hidden acidity, gives the wine shape and refreshing vibrancy. The finish is long, generous, and mineral with sneaky acids pricking your palate enough for mouthwatering freshness. It's delicious now especially with ripe goat cheeses and rich seafood and will get even more flinty/mineral over the next 7-8 years.
