Pierre Fresne divides his small (15 acres) vineyard plantings into 25 separate plots, farming, picking and making into wine each individually before blending together his main bottlings. But, most years, one or two plots are reserved for something "Arquémie" (old French for "alchemy"), a tiny production wine Pierre makes as part of his personal study of Champagne. This is the third of those ventures, 75% Pinot Meunier and 25% Pinot Noir from vintage 2013 with 20% reserve wines for complexity and then five years aging on the lees under cork for more complexity still before finishing at 4 g/l dosage.
Lovely to look at, with a shimmer of gold to the color and tiny, precise, bubbles that lift aromas of stone fruit, yellow citrus, brioche and yeast nicely. The texture is creamy and fluid and the flavors of ginger, lemon, brioche and tart stone fruit coat your palate and persist through a long, dry, finish that turns lightly spicy. The wine is easy to drink, but well worth slowing down to really savor and appreciate. Lovely stuff.
