This is Italy's most highly decorated Falanghina and one of the most highly decorated whites, period, over the past 9 years. From vintage 2012-2020 this bottling earned Italy's coveted Gambero Rosso "Tre Bicchieri" (three glasses) eight times (and earned "Due Bicchieri Rossi" - just one notch under three glasses, the other year). The 2021 edition is going to be another “three glass” winner this fall!
The new release is like the 2020 but with even more salty minerality and intense, mouthwatering, drive at the end. You’ll find bold, expressive, scents of ripe apple, nectarine, mid-summer honeysuckle and ripe Meyer lemon. The flavors are generous and complex, too, with notes of pear and peach orchard fruit complemented by fresh orange and yellow citrus and salty stone mineral flavors. But what really makes this so fantastic zest and zing – entering with rapier-like focus and driving the flavors all the way to the back of your palate and propelling a long, mouthwateringly, salty/citric finish.
If other refreshing Italian whites – like Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, Vermentino, etc. – are your thing, then you really want to try this. Even fans of exuberant New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc will fine enough fruit and volume here to satisfy, while anyone who enjoys the stony minerality and cut of fine Sancerre or Chablis is going to love the value here. A terrific seafood and solo sipping wine, for sure, but try it with basil-flecked Pizza Margherita for very special treat!
