Organic/Bio Since he inherited his grandfather’s vines and launched his winery in 2009, Adrien Roustan has tended his vines with organic farming and loads of care and made wines in a straight-ahead way intended to let his southern Rhone Vacqueyras terroir shine through. In the atypical 2021 vintage – after frost and less heat than recent harvests – he made what may be an atypical red, but one that’s certainly delicious!
A swirl lifts up juicy, ripe, red fruit - raspberry, strawberry, currant - with a hint of something spicy. In your mouth, it's focused and fresh, with sliced strawberry and raspberry fruit the main thing and notions of summer flowers (violets?) and sweet spice adding interest. It has the freshness of a summery rose (although it's decisively red wine) with the kind of vivid purity of Grenache fruit you normally only find from high-altitude places like Sierra de Gredos in Spain. Mouthwatering and enlivening, it will love a light chill and being poured into big glasses on the back deck on a warm summer evening.
“Tasted blind. A very restrained and elegant nose that has red fruits, subtle spice and redcurrant notes. The palate is pure with strawberry fruit and fine, rounded tannins that frame the wine nicely. This shows real elegance and restraint. The Grenache really shines through and the finish is pretty, with crushed violet and spice. Atypical but attractive. 85% Grenache, 5% Carignan, 5% Cinsault, 5% Mourvèdre. AB organic certified. 50% of clusters were destemmed, followed by a short maceration. Matured in concrete vats.”
