In the midst of central France's Allier oak forest, Saint Pourcain is sort of classed as "Loire Valley" (since it's near the Loire River) and in other, older, resources as a "lost vineyard of Burgundy" for it's affinity for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wines were favorites of the Bourbon kings of France, but the phylloxera disaster, improved transport within France, and changing fashion for riper wines all conspired to make Saint-Pourçain a sleepy backwater seldom seen in the market. Today only about 8 wines from the AOC make it into the US at all.
Denis Barbara's are the best, including this take on a Blanc de Noir Cremant. It's 100% Gamay, pressed white (mostly - you may detect a touch of pink) and aged 15 months on the lees before disgorgement with zero added sugar. Like all of Denis's wines, it's very mineral and freshly acidic with pretty white-fleshed fruit and a touch of toast. The wine is ALMOST as dramatic as the label.
