When he began in 1984, Etienne Brana was the first person in 100 years to plant a real vineyard in Irouleguy in the extreme southwest of the French Pyrenees. On tiny terraces climbing the mountains, he farms with an eye towards biodiversity, allowing terrace grasses to grow long and tall and creating habitat for more than a dozen birds that had been absent from the region for years. Even more rare, he makes a little white wine from Gros and Petit Manseng and dollops of Petit Courbu. It's vivid, super bright, mouthwatering and fascinating, working like the perfect squeeze of lime on fresh fish or Asian food.
