This wine is fabulous and, especially with an extra notch of ripeness and richness from the sunny 2015 growing season, it’s both the perfect Nebbiolo introduction and built to satisfy Barolo and Barbaresco fans looking for an exciting bargain to drink now – 2045. The wine is from Boca, a tiny DOC at the very farthest northern reaches of Piemonte, part of the Alto-Piemonte region that once dwarfed Barolo/Barbaresco in size and fame. After shrinking from 4,000+ hectares as recently as the 1960s to just 3 hectares of vines in the early 1980s, Boca is “surging” back and has “exploded” to a whopping 15 hectares of vines. Davide Carlone farmed a third of the Boca DOC in the early ‘80s (one HA) and still works 20% of the vines (3 ha) today.
The blend is classic Boca, around 70% Nebbiolo (called Spanna here) and 30% Vespolina which adds softness, roundness, and some floral perfume and spice. The farming is organic and winemaking “natural,” with just a tiny bit of sulfur added at bottling to allow the wines to travel safely. It’s classic Boca, transparent ruby in the glass and bursting with aromas and flavors of late-picked strawberries, cherries, lavender, blood orange, violets, sweet spice, and a juicy pomegranate pop on the finely (but firmly) tannic finish. Vinous critic Antonio Galloni missed tasting the 2015 Boca, but some of his comments in the 94 point review of Davide's 2016 apply here as well: " captures the purest essence of the appellation so well. Medium in body, with striking precision and tons of energy, the 2016 is just fabulous today. Blood orange, mint, spice and sweet red cherry, they all meld together in a wine of remarkable elegance and finesse. All the elements are so well balanced. Don’t let the wine’s weightless feel fool you, there is plenty of depth." Drink now – 2045.
