White Lirac must be, by law, a blend so the label says there’s 1% Grenache Blanc. But it’s really 100% Clairette from vines that survived the phylloxera epidemic of the 1860s and ‘70s here in the southern Rhone and fermented and aged in used oak. As Wine Advocate said in the 93 point review of the 2017, it “shows the majesty Clairette is capable of.” Richly textured and deeply flavored of pear and lemon curd it stays fresh due to the bite of fresh ginger and a light minerality at the end. Remarkable and remarkably good.
For You If: You’re after the rich, creamy, texture of southern Rhone whites with mouthwatering freshness and moderate, 13.5%, alcohol; you’re eating a rich shellfish dish and want something to match that intensity but not weigh you down.
Not For You If: You’re looking for light, fresh and fruity – this is hardly heavy, but there’s a lot of palate presence here for sure.
