From a joint venture between Spanish super-star (and Gandalf look-alike) Raul Perez and Rodrigo Mendez of Rias Baixas, this is lovely, easy to drink, and even lightly gutsy Ribeira Sacra. It's mainly Mencia and Bastardo (although the old vineyards have assorted other grapes here and there) aged in large, old, casks. A wild melange of black cherry, orange peel, cranberry, crushed stone and dried floral aromas and flavor are delivered with vivid acids and silky-firm tannins. Not much you can't drink this with, from grilled steak to octopus stew (hey - it's a Galicia thing!).
"The young red 2020 Castro Candaz, from a very warm vintage in Ribeira Sacra, is quite fruit-driven, straightforward and juicy with some fine tannins that would welcome food. It's mostly from Quiroga and fermented in stainless steel and matured in oak foudre. It's Mencía and Bastardo, but in this vintage the Bastardo was very ripe."
