Robert Parker called the 2011 edition of this perennial favorite value red, “Possibly the single greatest dry red wine value in the world.” Having tasted every vintage since then, we think this is one of the best releases of this all-time value champion we’ve tasted to date. As usual, it’s a blend of around 85% Garnacha plus Tempranillo and a splash of Syrah, all grown on the dusty, barren, soils of Spain’s Campo de Borja region. Naturally grown, hand harvested, and fermented and aged all in tank, it’s a perfect blend of rich, ripe, fruit and stylish, refreshing, structure.
The 2020 edition is even better than usual. As always, it’s medium-bodied and feels full and round and loaded with boatloads of ripe black cherry and raspberry fruit with a hint of fresh violets and a touch of earthy licorice. What’s different about the 2020 – other than the new, slightly modern, label – is that the tannins that make this such a great food wine are a bit softer and more supple than usual. And that there’s a new level of freshness that adds “thirst quenching” to the list of descriptors and will keep you coming back for more. As Josh Raynolds said about the 2019, “This wine is ridiculously easy to drink and delivers really great value.”
"A medium-bodied red with plum and strawberry character, as well as some cherry. Medium body, light tannins and a fruity finish."
