Lower ABV We start with an obscure appellation - Coteaux du Vendomois - on the Loir (no "e") river to the north of the main Loire Valley swath of vines. Then, in a red wine region (5 out of 6 bottles are red or pink), we go with a white wine. Which should be Chenin Blanc with, perhaps, a touch of Chardonnay. So we pick one that's 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Chardonnay, an "illegal" pairing that means we can't even use the obscure appellation on the label.
But it's so good! Even tasting it in Paris last March, we knew this would be a terrific Washington, DC, hot and sticky summer antidote. Like most us mid-summer, it's keeping things light (12.0% abv), starting with relaxed aromas of sliced lime, Granny Smith apple, wet stones and a bit of what you smell after your neighbor finishes cutting their lawn in the cool of the early evening. The green peach, lime, and ripe lemon fruit is nice, but the real fun here is how you get a light, friendly, sting of acid on the tip of your tongue at first and then a mouthwatering but gentle squeeze that keeps the flavors flowing and you attention from wandering too far. Fun, easygoing, stuff, for people who take summer that way, too.
