The best edition of one of our most popular Grüner Veltliner ever. Unlike most Austrian Grüner Veltiner that you’ll see at bargain prices, this isn’t a blend of younger vines or wine from less favored sites. It’s all from a fine single vineyard Anton Bauer farms not far from the Danube river in the heart of Wagram – one of the world’s finest places to grow great Grüner. In 2021, a long, cool, growing season followed by perfect autumn weather allowed Toni to choose the perfect moment to pick, bringing gloriously ripe fruit with layer upon layer of aroma and flavor and ample energy, vibrancy or cut. To capture the perfect fruit, Tony simply picks carefully, sorts out any imperfect berries, crushes out the juice and ferments and ages the wine cool in pristine stainless steel tanks.
The aromas and flavors are just a slightly revved-up version of what you’ve come to expect from Gmïrk: green pear, crunchy red apple, tangerine, Meyer lemon, and a dash of the white pepper savory note that makes Grüner Veltliner grown on Austria’s loess soils so very, very, captivating. It’s as light (just 12.5% alcohol), fresh and crisp as usual, but it delivers a bit more breadth and volume than usual to match the fine energy and drive. And, even more than last year, the wine finishes with a big dose of salty, crunchy, white stone minerality that makes the fruit flavors feel even bigger and scrubs your mouth clean and gets you ready for another sip.
