We often talk about Riesling's amazing ability to improve with time in bottle, which makes this rare opportunity to try a 16 year-old example just released for us from the winery so very, very, exciting! Austria's 2006 vintage is known for giving wines of substantial power and depth, and you'll certainly find that here. But time in bottle has allowed extra levels of detail and complexity to emerge in a wine that's drinking beautifully but still has years and years to go.
From first pour and swirl, it's gloriously expressive, serving up compelling aromas of lime juice, candied lime skin, powdered rock and that savory/mineral Riesling note we often call "petrol." On the palate it's very pure, almost crystalline, in feel with excellent depth to the lime and stone fruit flavors and generous dusting of powdery, almost salty, crushed slate minerality. The balance of creaminess in mouthfeel and energy and zest are compelling, as is the long, flowing, mouthwatering, finish where citrus, peach, wet stone and petrol-like flavors linger on and on. A really marvelous wine, but very limited.
