Organic/Bio Lower ABV Although not without its risks, the slopes of Italy’s Mt Vesuvius have been prized vineyard land for thousands of years. The Greeks first brought wine grapes here, archeology shows the Romans drank the volcano’s Piedirosso/Aglianico reds, and the early Church appreciated the wines enough to more or less concoct the entire myth that gave the region its name: Lacryma Chrisiti, or the Tears of Christ. For the past 70 years or so, the Sorrentino family have worked the land here and made classic expressions of the place, especially under current third-generation winemaker Benny Sorrentino.
This is the wine that gets down to the basics of Lacryma Christi, growing 90% Piedirosso and 10% Aglianico on their own roots organically, picking wonderfully ripe at just 12.5% alcohol, and making the wine in stainless steel for freshness and clarity. No oak gets in the way of the crunchy redcurrant, blackberry and cherry fruit or the savory notes of black olive, cracked pepper and gilled meat aromas and flavors. It feels richer and deeper than the modest alcohol suggests, with crunchy acids and chewy tannins that make your mouth work a bit before a burst of peppery tart pie cherry comes up on the end to get you ready for another bite of something delicious. Great with all forms of Southern Italian food (pasta, pizza, peppers and olives) and also with a big burger topped with a juicy slice of late summer tomato. Great value, too!
