This is one of those remarkable Champagne estates that flies under the radar and a wine that gets less attention still. But don't miss it. Eric and Isabelle Coulon farm close to organically in their vineyards around Vrigny in the Montagne de Reims. Their plantings are heavy on Pinot Meunier, mainly older vines (average age 38 years) planted from "massalle" cuttings rather than from nursery-grown clones. The 50% Meunier and 25% Chardonnay in this bottling are done all in steel, while the 25% Chardonnay sees time in barrel. This release is about 2/3 from vintage 2016 and the rest reserve wines from an old continuous reserve. The label shows Vrigny with the family's vines in blue and the plots used in this wine in gold.
Now forget all that. This is just delicious Champagne that you can admire if you want to, but really should just drink with abandon. The blend of Pinot richness in feel balanced by zesty, toasty, Chardonnay and a tiny 3 g/l dosage is at once lush and vibrant. Orange peel, lemon curd, toasted hazelnut, fresh flowers and a hint of oak give all the complexity you could wish for, while the creamy mid-palate and brightly incisive finish are satisfyingly addictive.
