Just west of Lisbon, Carcavelos is a fortified sweet wine that once rivaled Port and Madeira for fame (if never for market share - it's the smallest wine region in Portugal). Today, just one producer remains. Quinta dos Pesos ceased operations when the owner died in 2005 and a family dispute trapped his remaining barrels in the old cellar in legal limbo. The owner of US importer Haus Alpenz discovered the remaining casks in 2018 and selected this and a few others for bottling - the final bottles ever to bear the name. A field blend of white (Arinto, Gallego Dourado, Ratinho, Rabo do Ovelha) and red grapes (João Santarem, Espadeiro Tinto) aged in cask until bottling a few years ago.
Like the 1996, this 1998 is terrific, somewhere between a 20 year Tawny Port and a zesty Verdelho Madeira in style. It's richer and nuttier than the '96, with more notes of chocolate, caramel and toasted nuts, but still has energy from dark cherry fruit and citric acidity to drive through a long, flowing, finish. Unique and completely delicious.
