As owner/winemaker Jim Anderson writes, “The Estate Vineyard, Old Vine bottling is the flagship wine of Patricia Green Cellars.” Like the “regular” Estate Pinot, this comes from a sampling of vines across the Ribbon Ridge Estate Vineyard, but here all from vines 25-38 years of age. As Jim notes, these older vines move away from more common Ribbon Ridge black-fruited character shifts “from the darker fruit spectrum to a brighter, redder style. The wine gains length and a wonderful counterbalance of austerity to its rich texture. As well there is a sense of minerality intermingling with the long chain tannins that draw the wine out and provide exceptional length.”
There’s a ton of old-vine intensity here, so much so that the wine needs at least an hour of air (or, better, a few years in cellar) to start to show. Before then, it’s savory, dusky, and shows forest floor, earth and spice. After airing out, it’s all super dark crushed raspberries and kirsch with fresh spice from lots of whole clusters in the fermenters (around 60-70% across all the lots). With around 77% of the 45 barrels neutral, there’s now wood tannin here, which means the substantial amount of grip is wonderfully supple and resolves quickly, leaving ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit lingering on. Truly excellent Willamette Valley Pinot Noir to drink from 2025 through as long as you’d care to hold it.
"From vines planted between 1984 and 1997, the 2021 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard Old Vine moves to a savory realm. Initially the aromatics are more reserved, but it has an intense texture, with great structure, significant persistence, and mineral accents throughout. It’s long on the palate and demands 3-5 years of cellar time. Mouthwatering and long, it’s an incredible wine to drink 2026-2046. It seems insane that this wine and the Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard are from the same vineyard."
