Jacquesson’s 700-series wines capture the essence of each vintage balanced by a just-right dollop of reserve wines for layered complexity. Despite the early-season heat spikes, 2019 is a fairly classic vintage in Champagne with wines delivering more noticeable intensity, minerality and acidity than in 2018. The greater concentration of fruit means the toast/yeast flavors of Champagne winemaking are dialed down just a bit. Or, rather, are more completely balanced by the wines’ generous fruit.
That’s especially true at Jacquessson, where the late frost in the Cote de Blancs reduced the amount of Chardonnay available for the 700-series blend. As Galloni explains in his 93 point review, “The NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 747 (2019 base) marries textural richness with notable vibrancy. Lemon confit, mint, white pepper, tangerine peel and graphite lend energy throughout. All the elements are very nicely balanced. I especially admire the textural depth here. Spring frost was particularly damaging to the Chardonnay, so the blend is distinctly Pinot-leaning in this release.”
For You If: You're in the mood for more Pinot-power than Jacquesson normally shows with no loss of freshness and minerality.
Not For You If: You're looking for a lean, mean, Extra Brut - this has body, texture and power to burn with a long, bone-dry, finish.
