Lower ABV Ribeira Sacra is mainly red wine country, and certainly Pedro Perez’s Mencia-based reds get most of the attention here with their 95, 97 and 98 point ratings from Wine Advocate. But his tiny production white (less than 850 cases) captures the same excitement and verve as the reds and is a bargain to boot! This is a field blend from several vineyards scattered around the town of Amandi, all planted mostly to Godello (around 65%) with inter-plantings of native grapes like Treixadura, Albariño, Torrontés and Loureira.
Godello’s signature fresh pineapple flavor is certainly present, but accents of early-season stone fruit, lemon and lime pulp, crushed sea shell, and a captivating bay leaf note give the wine outstanding complexity. The fresh acids give it drive and a tingly, mouthwatering, finish that sustains the flavors beautifully. Drink this a tad warmer than, say, Sauvignon Blanc by taking it out of the fridge for 30 minutes or pulling it directly from your cool wine cellar. A terrific match for any seafood – especially shrimp, squid and octopus – but also with soft and tangy cheeses or a handful of almonds. Lovely stuff.
