Back to a “normal” 1,635 bottle production! We’ve sold every commercial release of this wine, starting with the 2011. And the thing that always jumps out at you about it is the amazing freshness for a wine of such mammoth power and from such a ridiculously hot, dry, place as Priorat. That’s my first reaction to the 2019 “Classic,” Silvia’s flagship cuvee. The concentration and intensity are even higher than in the past, and there’s certainly no shortage of huge red raspberry and baked strawberry fruit with complicating notes of sweet spice, roasted meat and smoke for extra interest. But what’s so impressive is how fresh the just-right acids and super-refined (if gum-climbing) tannins balance all the richness and power to perfection. The flavors right now suggest very, very, excellent Chateauneuf du Pape, but the structure, grip, and slate minerality could only be Priorat. And Silvia’s Priorat Classic, at that.
As always, this is a blend of mainly Garnacha (both Negre and “Hairy” Grenache) with dollops of Syrah and Carinyena (including some planted in 1919). The grapes get a long, 25-32 day, maceration while fermenting in amphora and very high-end new oak barrels that have had the tops removed. Then the young wine ages in those same barrels (with the tops back on) for 13 months. As we mentioned last year, Silvia is incorporating more very high-end French oak in her winemaking, which goes a long way to explaining why the tannins are so refined and silky here. Decant for an hour or two now and enjoy through 2034 and beyond. Magnificent.
