A difficult 2020 growing season slashed production here by about half, so Silvia was only able to make 1,199 bottles of the wine that simply must be the finest 100% white Grenache made in the world. (When I told Silvia that in 2019, she frowned, furrowed her brow, and said, “How many people try to make a good one?” Fair point. Let’s try this. The 2020 ENV Garnatxa Blanca transcends any reasonable expectation of how great white Grenache can be while still clearly representing the essence of the grape and the place it was grown. Pretty much the definition of great winegrowing and making.
Despite (or because of?) the small production, this is even more concentrated and deep than usual this year. The aromas are complex and lovely, featuring suggestions of white stone fruit, dry straw, fennel frond, Meyer lemon, candied ginger, quice, Asian pair…well, you get the idea. The flavors follow in a wine of deep, almost viscous, texture mid-palate before oystershell minerality and saltiness comes up to lift and sustain the flavors and freshen your mouth for the next sip. It’s wildly fun to drink right now solo or with fish (especially with a little spicy fruit salsa!) and will improve for 5+ years and hold longer than that. Truly stunning.
