Only 668 bottles made. “Quasi Centenaria” roughly translates to “about 100 years old,” a reference to this gnarly old Carignan vineyard planted right around 1919. The vines grow on two steep, rock-covered, slopes, one facing north and the other south, located in the heart of Priorat. Given the age of the vines, the lack of water, extreme heat, and absence of nutrients in the soil, these vines struggle to give 300 grams of fruit per bush – enough for about two-thirds of a bottle per vine.
It took more than 100 years for the vines to be able to give this kind of fruit, so it won’t shock you to learn the wine is going to need a few years more to fully express itself. But it’s already stunning and easily my favorite release to date. Right now it’s all about masses of intensely concentrated baked blueberry fruit, ink, dark summer flowers, and layer upon layer of dusty slate minerality. What’s really breathtaking is the level of freshness here on the nose, palate, and especially on the very long, flowing, juicy, finish. No question, this is a powerful wine, but one that shows remarkable elegance and grace as well. I’ve called previous vintages “Lebron James in a Tom Ford tuxedo” and, to the extent that makes any sense to you, it’s even more true in this profound 2019. Taste now for fun and drink for maximum impact from 2026 forward.
