If you don’t know the great red wine grape sometimes called Italy’s “Barolo of the South,” then you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better introduction than this. And if you think Aglianico only makes fierce, biting, super-earthy wines (as in Taurasi), then you really need to get to know Elena Fucci’s sines from the volcanic ash soils of Monte Vulture in remote Basilicata. This is her top wine, 100% Aglianico that’s harvested after long, slow, ripening at high elevations and then allowed to mellow a bit for a year in cask and longer in bottle. It’s wonderfully perfumed and deeply flavored, showing notes of raspberry and blueberry, wild herb and black olive and finishing with firm, but refined and moutwatering, power and grip. A great match for grilled lamb, herbed eggplant, or even swordfish sauced with tomato and olives. Brilliant stuff.
“Simply put, Elena Fucci is one of Italy’s finest red wine producers and has been at the top of the country’s quality pyramid since they started making wine in 2000. Perfumed aromas of red berry liqueur and ripe red cherry are lifted by pungent medicinal herbs and complemented by sexy vanilla and spice tones. Full-bodied yet delicate, with a fine-grained personality and compelling sweetness on the suave finish. This is aged 12 months in 50% new and 50% used French oak barriques.”
