Organic/Bio We don’t see much Cour-Cheverny (and never at this low a price) because there’s just so very little made. The grape here is nearly extinct Romorantin and just 150 acres or so of it remain in these vineyards between Tours and Orleans in the Loire Valley. The Gendrier family farms 25 acres of Romarantin, making theirs the largest single plot of the grape in the world.
Romorantin is decidedly not a “fruity” grape, but winegrower Alex Gendrier coaxes out lovely notes of apricot, baked apple and green citrus here to go with more traditional waxy, earthy, smoky notes. The acids and texture are a bit reminiscent of middle-Loire Chenin Blanc, but the citrus and hint of petrol evokes Riesling comparisons, too. This mouthwatering, almost salty, wine is deliciously distinctive.
