Organic/Bio Cheverny is the Loire Valley’s forgotten appellation, known (if at all) for Sauvignon/Chardonnay whites that offer excellent value alternatives to Sancerre. But there’s a little red wine from Pinot Noir and Gamay here between Tours and Orleans, and it can be excellent. Like here!
The blend here is 85% Pinot Noir and 20% Gamay, and if that makes you think of old-school Burgundy Passetoutgrain, then you’re very much on the right track. It’s fun and fruity on the nose and palate, but with a savory, food-friendly, edge and a salty iodine minerality that would make it a pretty terrific red to pair with tuna or salmon. The big fruit, huge energy, and excellent palate length make it fun to drink solo and a fine companion for everything from juicy beef burgers to Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixins.
