Organic/Bio From vines averaging 70 years of age, this wine is now so good that Julian is putting his own name on the label. This is the second time Julian has performed no green harvest in his vineyards – in part because strong winds during flowering did he work for him! As he told me, “We are a lazy culture in Provence. When you have 120km wind in May, you say, “We were going to de-bud but the wind did it for us.” This also he second time he left his Grenache on the stems, which added a very welcome level of freshness and spice to what could have been a heavy, thick, wine in this dry vintage.
It’s a blend of about 60% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault, Syrah, Vaccarèse, and Clairette Rose, all raised in a mixture of large and small barrels.
"Warm and lush in feel, with a cascade of cassis, plum puree and raspberry coulis flavors gliding through, laced with red licorice accents and enlivened by flashes of garrigue and rooibos tea on the finish. Shows lots of range and character. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2022 through 2036."
"Replacing the Signature bottling, winemaker Julien Barrot has now put his name on the estate's entry-level Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot is a fine effort, combining black cherries and red raspberries on the nose and backing the impressive fruit with ample weight, a plush, velvety texture and great purity and length on the finish. It should drink well for a decade or more."
"Super-ripe cherry fruit, with the fullness and plumpness of Châteauneuf. Dry, fine tannins, bright acid, high alcohol. A heavyweight, but not a slob, with charm and complexity on the finish."
