This wine is stupid good and everyone who a) loves old-school Sancerre that actually has cut and bite and b) is tired of spending $30-$45 for Sancerre that feels fat and overly fruited should buy by the case. It’s 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Coteaux Du Giennois, a bit north of Sancerre and close to Pouilly Fume on the Right Bank of the Loire River. This bottle is from a vineyard lower down on a south-facing hill where the soil is a glorious jumble of white limestone and clay marls.
These limestone/clay soils tend to accentuate the minerality and white/green fruit side of Sancerre, even during warm growing seasons like 2019. It’s pretty much the essence of flint and quartz minerality, lifting the white citrus and green peach flavors and driving them relentlessly through a vivid, long, mouthwatering, lip-smacking, wait – where did the rest of the bottle go? – finish. At $30+, it would be worth every penny. At these prices I can’t figure out why we only had 30 cases imported just for us and you. Don’t miss this one.
