Lower ABV Bodegas Ponce is the project of Manchuela wunderkind Juan Antonio Ponce. That was a fair way to describe him in 2005 when, at the age of 23, he finished up 5 years working for superstar Telmo Rodriguez and came home to start his project with is father. He picks all his fruit by hand, lays the bunches in open top fermenters, chills them to 45 degrees and then waits for fermentation to start. As the grapes work, he jumps in the fermenters and crushes the grapes by foot until they bubble away to dryness. Then aging in old oak for the wine to harmonize but not acquire any oak flavor.

His “village” wine is stupid good and crazy fun. It opens with a huge nose redolent of the kind of intense ripe berry fruit you'd normally get from carbonic maceration in a place like Beaujolais. That soon falls back to reveal honest, crunchy, cherry and raspberry fruit with hints of licorice root, fresh earth flavors. There's juicy acidity for freshness and a nice tanninc grip to make it play well with sausages, burgers, and other casual foods. And a big kick of flavor and mouthwatering structure at the end just to be sure you remember how good it is and come back for another sip. All at a vivid, pure, 12.0% alcohol.

Wine Advocate: 93 Points

"Juan António Ponce told me 2021 is one of those vintages when you realize in wine you never know everything... He thinks the 2021 Clos Lojen is the most complete vintage ever for this wine, with unusual freshness (despite "normal" parameters like a pH of 3.7 and five grams of acidity) and 12% alcohol. It's intense and has varietal Bobal typicity with good weight. It fermented in 4,500-liter oak vats with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 4,500-, 10,000- and 15,000-liter French oak vats for six months. This is sharp and austere, with lower alcohol and is more mineral than fruit-driven. Incredible value."
