Organic/Bio The edges of Antiquum Farm’s “Big Field” vineyard are kind of the far edge of what Pinot Noir can do. The winemaking is simple enough – fully de-stemmed fruit, open top fermenters, a bit of a post-ferment soak for texture, and 10 months aging in around 30% new French oak. The vines were normal enough when planted, a mix of Wadensvil and Dijon 667 clone, and like the rest of the vineyard in 2022 they were picked in the pre-dawn dark in mid-October, 2022. But exposed to the extreme biodiversity Stephen’s Grazing-Based Viticulture creates, Pinot Noir gets pretty wild here.
“Tropical” isn’t a tasting note we use with any other Pinot Noir we taste, but it’s pretty much impossible to describe this wine without mentioning ripe and tangy passionfruit. Also “concentration,” “intensity,” and “mouthwatering balance” are very generous levels of ripeness. Crushed raspberry, brandied fruitcake, mocha, blood orange, spice and (of course) passionfruit aromas and flavors ebb and flow with kaleidoscopic complexity on the nose and palate, before a squirt of citric acidity and grip of super-fine tannins bring everything to a harmonious close. Wildly delicious already and even better from 2025-2037 or longer. Just 500 cases made.
