The Verdicchio grape emerged long ago in the Veneto near Verona and moved south into the Marche sometime in the 13th or 14th centuries. Called Trebbiano di Soave in the Veneto, the greenish hue of wines grown in Marche earned it the adjective “verde” and, ultimately, the name Verdicchio. Today it grows across Italy, but its finest expression comes in the region known as Castelli dei Jesi where vines flow down the Apennine Mountains towards the Adriatic Sea below.
If you want to know what a really good Jesi Verdicchio is supposed to taste like…well, this is it! The aromas are inviting if subtle with hints of almond/almond blossom adding complexity to the primary scents of green apple and wet stone. In the mouth you’ll know where the “green” in the name comes from. It serves up a big mouthful of juicy, ripe, mouthwatering Granny Smith apple dipped in lime juice and dusted with a bit of lime zest before finishing crisp and clean with a touch of seashell saltiness for extra interest. It’s a great partner for all kinds of seafood, will shine with poultry dishes and summer salads, and is utterly delicious to just drink. A winner at the $14.99-$18.99 we see it selling for elsewhere.
