Lower ABV This is only the 4th time Tim Smith turned some of his Barossa Matero (Mourvedre) into pink wine, but it’s pretty obvious he’s onto something! We love the combination of Matero’s body and non-fruit character plus a bit of pretty Provencal fruit from a splash of Grenache. The Vinous review of the 2022 edition feels spot on here: “understated but carries impressive balance and length. Pale onion skin in color, it offers up an elegant mix of sweet and savory - white strawberry and spice with touches of charcuterie and new leather. Dry, mid-weight and textural, more meaty and spicy flavors emerge with a kick of acidity providing an attractive bite to the finish.”
Tim says it pairs with “Ice buckets. Swimming pools. Pool boys. Some soft cheese maybe…” We’re thinking cold fried chicken would be great here, but you get the idea.
For You If: You’re after a nicely dry and direct rosé with just a hint of difference from the typical Provencal pink; you’d like a rose that’s plenty dry and fresh but has just a touch more body than most.
Not For You If: You’re after something super-fruity or super-soft; this had plenty of fruit but more than that is going on and it finishes with a light, fresh, grip.
