The best “buy” in very high-end Napa Cab you’ll taste this year, maybe ever. It’s 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot from a vineyard at the very top of Spring Mountain, looking down on St Helena from the west. Like the Spring Mountain classics from neighbors Togni, Lakoya, Vineyard 7 & 8, Pride and Stony Hill, it’s loaded with ripe blackberry and currant fruit with plenty of cedar and spice. And while plenty big and firm, it also delivers the freshness, finesse and silky – if substantial! – tannins that earned the big name wines 95-100 point critical raves.
So why does it cost so much less? Not cheap winemaking – Neil learned from Philippe Melka at Seavey Vineyards, Bryant Family and Vineyard 29. Partially it’s because Neil spends zero money on marketing, fancy packaging, winery hospitality, etc. He makes his wines in a utilitarian space, not a fancy show winery. And, most importantly, from his “day job” as grape and wine broker, Neil knows where the good grapes are and how to get them a great value prices. Which he passes on to us. All of his Thread Feather’s single-AVA Napa Cabs are outstanding. This one is outstanding, period.
For You If: You like your Napa Cab bold, silky, fully flavored and priced far under anything your guests would ever guess!
