Lower ABV Austria’s Grüner Veltliner grape likes to tell you where it was grown. There’s always a blend of citrus, stone and orchard fruit, usually more or less dusty/chalky minerality, mostly a light-to-medium-body feel. And a warm, spicey, lightly vegetal note we call “white pepper” that sets GV apart from wines like Albarino, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. How those mix up and in what weights depends a bit on wine-growing/winemaking practices and a lot on where in Austria the grapes grew.
Matthias Ruttenstock grows his grapes in Weinviertel, to the east of Kamptal and Wagram. The rich soils give ripe fruit and the cold nights keep things fresh enough that descriptors like citrus, Granny Smith apple and crunchy Anjou pear fit. And the bare rock soil and strong winds amp up Grüner’s classic white pepper to feel more like the spicy black stuff. It’s delightful on its own poolside or on the deck, and shares all Grüner Veltliner’s ability to pair with all kinds of food, including asparagus, greens (cooked or salad), pork, fresh water fish, oysters. And, of course, a good slab of schnitzel.
For You If: You enjoy the zip and zing of wines like Albarino and Sauvignon Blanc with flavors somewhere in between and a pinch of peppery spice to liven things up even more.
