We didn’t set out to build a Portuguese six-pack for July 4th weekend in the USA. But then we asked ourselves, “What are the best values in refreshing white and rosé and gutsy, cookout-friendly, reds in the shop?” Well, welcome to our all Portuguese sampler in Red (well Pink), White and Blue (the label at least). Quinta da Raza Vinho Verde Rose 2024 – The pink wine hit of summer so far at CBC, this blend of Padeiro, Espadal and Vinhão is dry and has a light spritz that lifts the fresh cherry and red berry fruit and wild flower flavors. A dusting on lime zest at the end is more refreshing still.
Encostas do Lima Vinho Verde Schist 2024 – 100% Loureiro grapes grown on steeply sloped, schist-covered, vineyards. It’s tangy and a little tart, showing notes of passionfruit, ripe lemon, tangerine and citrus pith with a lovely hint of orange blossom on the nose and palate.
Cartuxa Eugenio de Almeida Red Blend EA 2021 – From the hotter, higher, vineyards of eastern Portugal, this is a gutsy blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and Castelão, all fermented and aged in tank. A hint of black tea savoriness complements the bold blackberry fruit and the chalky tannins give just enough support. Bring on some burgers!
