Lower ABV After nearly dying out in the mid-20th century, the traditional Gemischter Satz – or Field Blend – approach to winegrowing is having a revival in Austria as a useful way to balance the seasonal risks of under-ripeness and over-ripeness. Here Paul grows four varietals together: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and the red grape Zweigelt. All picked together, including some still a little green, some a tad raisined and most right down the middle. One press, one tank, one delicious wine.
On a hot summer’s day, give it a swirl and you’ll start to cool off immediately to the crisp aromas of Mutsu apple, green grape, stone fruit, lime and savory white pepper. To take a sip is to go on a joy ride! At first dry, mineral, Granny Smith apple crisp, the wine explodes on the middle/back, drenching your palate with flavors of apple, green and yellow citrus, crisp stone fruit, dusty gravel and more. Then, at the end, a burst of lemon, peach blossom and classic GV white pepper that sail on and on. It's a lot more dense and intense than the price point or 12.0% alcohol suggest, with a tart, tangy, finish that really won't quit. Great stuff here while it lasts.
For You If: You like the freshness of Gruner Veltliner, the fruit of Sauvignon Blanc and the minerality and vibrancy of Muscadet; you're looking for a patio-pounder white that will reward paying attention to when you feel that way, too.
