Organic/Bio Lower ABV We started to call this “Muscadet for Chablis and white Burgundy drinkers.” But that actually under-sells Jeremy Huchet’s accomplishment here. Clisson was one of the first three of, now, 11 “Crus” of Muscadet, and it’s the one best known for power, richness and super salty minerality. Jeremy’s plot is in Château de la Templerie, an old Knights Templar holding that he’s farmed organically since 2010. Clisson is all about granite, specifically granite that’s fractured vertically, creating channels grapevine roots slither down in search of water and mineral food.
Fermented and aged on the lees for 30+ months in old oak foudre, Jeremy’s 2021 Clisson is first and foremost about minerals – chalk, wet schist, crushed seashells, granite dust – and lees – toasty, almost nutty, base notes. But there’s much more here: lemon drops, Granny Smith apple skin, lemon verbena and other tangy/salty/savory flavors hard to describe. The zip and saltiness make it a natural for oysters, but Clisson’s richness and power give this 12% wine enough body and roundness to delight sipped solo, too. A remarkable wine that, at age 5, is just getting started.
For You If: You love intensely mineral whites with moderate levels of fruit, real body, and hugely long finishes; you’re serving seafood of any kind and want a wine to make the seafood taste even more of the sea; you enjoy wines with loads of flavor but not loads of fruit – think Chablis, wines of Savoie and Switzerland, and, of course, great Muscadet!
