Lower ABV Sicily’s lightly colored Nerello Mascalese grape lends itself to pale, pure, rosé, but few reach the heights of this one. Mostly young vines from the famed San Lorenzo Contrade, the fruit gets a few hours of skin contact in vat then finishes dry in tank. It’s vibrant, juicy and really compelling solo and with all kinds of food.
I think the 91 point Vinous write-up on the 2020 vintage matches this year’s release well: “Orange-tinged bright pale pink. Savory aromas and flavors of peach, potpourri, herbs and violet. Hints of tar and wisteria emerge on the perfumed mouth, with bright harmonious acidity extending the flavors nicely on the long back end. Try this beauty with spaghetti and prawns in tomato sauce.”
For You If: You enjoy a rosé with definite fruit but also lots and lots of floral and savory complexity; you’re looking for seafood rosé – this has the back-end minerality to shine with anything from the sea.
