The La Vallee Suspendue is intended to be a synthesis, not only of both sides of the river but also of vintages current and past. It's equal parts Meunier from Mardeuil, Fleury-la-Rivière and Damery plus 15% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay for balance. It's 50% vintage 2017 and 50% from a perpetual reserve begun in 1999, all aged 10 months in oak and with at least 6 years on the lees.
The results are intense and expressive and definitely savory – a wine that’s easy to drink solo but really deserves a complex plate of food. Audry Frick describes is perfectly in her 93 point review in JebDunnuck.com: “Medium golden yellow hue, the NV Champagne La Vallée Suspendue Extra Brut is expressive on the nose and leaps from the glass with rounded aromas of lemon curd, merengue, pastry dough, marzipan, and red berries. It has more intensity on the palate, becoming more savory and salty, with a brothy feel, a fluffy mousse, and a chalky, textured finish. This is a solid wine with a lot of character to enjoy over the coming 10 years.”
For You If: You're after a super-complex, layered, Champagne that brings the character of age and savory notes to the fore and finishes chalky, nutty and very dry.
Not For You If: You're in the mood for something fruity, easy or light in feel - this is a wine of savory substance!
