Organic/Bio Sabastian Zuccardi is helping to revolutionize our understanding of Mendoza Malbec and this, as he writes, “is a very important wine in my life. Beginning to make it was a key step on our way.” Whole clusters of Malbec from the stoniest sites in Paraje Altamira ferment and age in raw concrete to unlock Malbec’s own flavor and structure. As Wine Advocate wrote last year, “This is the wine that explains their philosophy without breaking your piggy bank. It is delicious, serious, approachable and with aging potential. What else do you want? I have sometimes confused this wine blind with one of their top bottlings. This is one of the best values around.”
Pop-n-pour, this is the saltiest red wine I’ve ever tasted! Give it a least an hour of air (or 2-3 years in cellar) and the velvet texture and rich, tangy, red fruit unfurls. JamesSuckling.com describes it well in their 95 point review, “What a perfumed nose with plenty of violets, iodine, blueberries and mineral. Lots of sappy fruit with fine-grained tannins that tightly wrap the full-bodied palate. Pristine, concentrated and quintessential.” Maybe the best wine for grilled meat in the shop right now.
For You If: You’re looking for a powerful red wine that will shine with grilled meats of all kinds with no oak to get in the way of the flavor of the wine and your food; you love the flavor of rich, ripe, unadorned, Malbec.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something soft or enriched by chocolatey oak – this is a firm, mineral, red done all in raw concrete with no oak at all.
