Lower ABV More or less wrapping around Pouilly Fuisse, Saint Veran is the southernmost extension of Burgundy – any further south and you’re in Beaujolais. The mixture of southerly warmth and clay-limestone soils gives Saint Veran Chardonnay a bit of extra body and richness compared to much of the Macon. Christophe Thibert balances that with selections from both warmer and cooler parts of the appellation, creating a wine of rich texture and fresh flavors. Because of the depth here, 30% of the wine ferments and ages in French oak to add spice while 70% stays in stainless steel for maximum freshness. This is almost too easy to drink right now just for the joy of it and will be even better at table with roasted birds, seafood in rich, buttery, sauces and nutty cheeses.
For You If: You want to step up from the quality of most “Bourgogne Blanc” or Sonoma Coast Chardonnay at this price point to get more complexity, delineation and satisfaction.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the lean bite and nerve of really cool-climate Chardonnay or the tropical fruit and flesh of Chard from warmer places – this sits in between.
“Outstanding Top Value. Here the wood treatment is more obvious if still reasonably subtle on the nose of acacia blossom, essence of pear and discreet lemongrass wisps. The rich, supple and delicious medium-bodied flavors also possess a caressing yet punchy mouthfeel while offering a bracing salinity on the slightly more complex and lingering finale. This is an excellent St. Véran and worth a look.”
