Lot's of rarity value here, starting with an 9 year-old Italian red selling for so very little. It's from the vines around the tiny village of Copertino, just north of Salice Salentino in Puglia, the heel of Italy's boot. Thirty-six growers founded the co-op in 1935 and they've adopted an unusual strategy for this, their top wine. It's mainly Negromaro, Puglia's best red grape, with a touch of Malvasia Negre for perfume. In the best vintages, the best lots of young wine are set aside for aging in large oak casks for two years then blended, placed in underground concrete tanks, and left to rest until the winemaking team decides it's ready to drink.
It's a bold, earthy, wine that’s loaded with distinctive character. Wine Spectator captures it nicely in the 89 point review, “This creamy red is well-spiced and fragrant, with orange peel acidity animating plumped cherry and sultana, dried eucalyptus, vanilla, tar, and leather notes.”
For You If: You love rich, earthy, even slightly funky wines with a whiff of barnyard balanced by dark, spiced, fruit.
Not For You If: You’re after something fresh and fruity – this is earthy, maturing and deep.
