Lower ABV The Bellei family have been making this wine since founding Cantina della Volta in 1920 and it represents the essence of Lambrusco tradition. The red Lambrusco di Sorpara grapes are crushed and fermented in steel then go through secondary fermentation in bottle with no dosage or disgorgement (so there’s a bit of lees still in the bottle – drink it up!).
Perhaps the most perfect pizza wine ever, Wine Enthusiast describes it well in their review of another vintage, “Showcases small ripe strawberries, complete with their seeds, alongside notes of strawberry leaf and subtle rose hip aromas, intertwined with a mixed bouquet of herbs. It strikes a harmonious balance between savory and fruity notes, enhanced by mouthwatering acidity. The tart lift of the finish makes it an ideal companion for salty snacks, grilled food, or a delectable slice of pizza.”
For You If: You want to know what great “old school” Lambrusco tastes like – this is like how it used to be, but with better farming and a cleaner winery; you’re eating something salty/fried or just pounding down a savory pizza – this will make both taste even better!
Not For You If: You’re just too weirded out by frothy red wine served cold to even give it a try – but we hope you’ll get over the initial shock and learn how good it is!
