Lower ABV Vermentino di Sardegna belongs in the sipping rotation of anyone who loves Sauvignon Blanc/Sancerre, Albarino, Grüner Veltliner, Soave, Rueda Verdejo – pretty much any light, citrusy, fresh white full of fruit and personality. Especially, like here, when it comes from sandy soils of the warmer, sunnier, western side of the island. Because that gives you the perfect blend of ripe, crunchy, fruit and salty/savory minerality.
You’ll love the big burst of lemon and pink grapefruit citrus that opens the aromas and then how hints of lime, peach and scrubby wild herbs come up to join the fun. Take a sip and you’ll notice that it feels light and crisp rather than creamy or rich in feel – just 1 month on the lees – but with excellent intensity to the lemon, lime, pink grapefruit and white peach flavors. A hint of wild herbs – they grow all around the vineyards – comes and goes as the sea salt and crushed rock minerality asserts itself and the wine finishes with a fine, dusty, grip. Delicious as a hot afternoon thirst-quencher and even better with citrus/goat cheese salads and, of course, any kind of seafood.
For You If: You love fruit-filled, citrusy, no-oak, whites with a salty, mouthwatering, kick; you’re after a great value in classy no-oak white that works at table like a $40+ Sancerre.
