Unless you taste a lot of California Chardonnay, it can be hard to realize how big an accomplishment Bartholomew Broadbent has pulled off here. It's 100% Chardonnay, picked ripe and full of pear and stone fruit flavors perfectly balanced by a squirt of citrus acidity. Most of the wine saw only steel aging, keeping the fruit flavors bold and forward, with around 30% aging in French oak for texture, structure and spice. There's more than enough richness here for fans of traditional Cali Chard while staying dry and just plain tasty enough to satisfy white drinkers who have given up on California's most planted, and just plain best, white grape.
Wine Enthusiast describes it well in the 91 point, "Best Buy," recommendation: "Bright and clean aromas on the nose are coupled with jasmine tea, nectarine, spearmint, and toasty vanilla. The flavors on the palate are youthful: apple, sweet apple blossoms, nutmeg, and austere tannins swirl throughout the mid-palate, leaving a smooth yet baking spice-driven fruit engulfing the palate. pair with sauteed sablefish, white wine, orange butter sauce." The magazine listed a $19 release price for this, and it's certainly at the top of the class of $20 Chards we've tasted. And wildly outperforms our sale price!
For You If: You like California Chardonnay with good body, rich fruit, a touch of butter and oak spice, and a dry, fresh, finish; you have friends who like Chardonnay even if Cali Chard isn’t normally your thing.
Not For You If: You’re looking for a butter-and-oak-bomb with sweet caramel on the finish – this is all the way dry and the oak and butter are accents, not main events.
