Organic/Bio The most mind-blowing Pinot Gris from the slightly insane grazing-based grape grower Stephen Hagen. As Wine Enthusiast said of the 93 point Perpetua I last year, “It's complex and leesy, with pear and melon fruits, a hint of mint and a mineral-soaked foundation. Detailed and distinctive, it's in a league of its own.” We’d add that it’s wonderfully pure and layered and that the flavors and texture seems to change and evolve with every sip. A remarkably delicious rarity you really ought to try.
"Made in two 1,000-litre barrels. Stephen Hagen tells me that every year they pull out 70 cases, blend, bottle and replenish. This bottling is a blend of 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The project didn't start until 2017 and they skipped 2020 due to smoke. Pale lemon in colour. Smells like outstanding Chardonnay. Rich with light oak and toast character and a light, lifted note of blossom and hazelnut cream. Complex and layered, like pulling apart a well-laminated croissant. The palate is intense with mouth-watering acidity and layered vanilla cream. Lingers at least 40 seconds. Just a touch of warmth. These Pinot Gris are so expressive. I think the warmth is more due to the fact that we're tasting these at room temperature rather than any alcohol imbalance."
